  2. Michigan manufacturer electronics takeback (NREPA Part 173)State program · MichiganMichigan residentsFree
    How it works

Under Part 173 of Michigan's Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (2008), overseen by EGLE, manufacturers of computers, monitors, tablets, desktop printers and TVs sold in Michigan must register each year and offer consumers and small businesses (10 or fewer employees) a free, convenient takeback program, mostly by mail-back. Computer makers take back their own brands; TV makers take any brand. Up to 7 devices per person per day. Collection sites not part of a manufacturer program may charge.

    Cost & rules
    • TVs with a screen of 4 inches or more (CRT, plasma, LCD, LED, projection). TV manufacturers must take any brand, and each program has a no-cost option for TVs too large to mail.
    • Use the manufacturer's takeback program (mostly mail-back; EGLE lists registered manufacturers with links). A collection site or event that is not part of a manufacturer program may charge a reasonable fee.
    • For households and small businesses (10 or fewer employees) using the device in Michigan.

Before you go

  1. Note whether it’s a flat screen or an older CRT (tube) set; many programs price them differently.
  2. Ask whether a cracked screen or broken glass changes the price or handling.
  3. Confirm the total cost, including any visit fee, before you load it.
