Household amounts are free for county residents.

    Cost & rules
    • Free for household amounts brought by Salt Lake County residents; appointment needed for large quantities.
    • Sites: 8805 South 700 West, Sandy (Mon-Sat 7-5); Salt Lake Valley Landfill, 6030 W California Ave (staffed Mon, Fri, Sat; self-service Tue-Thu); Trans-Jordan Landfill, 10473 S Bacchus Hwy (Mon-Sat 8-5).
    • Alkaline batteries may go in household trash in a box or container with 9-volt terminals taped; lithium, NiMH, NiCd and vehicle batteries should go to an HHW site.

    How it works

Landfill run by Trans-Jordan Cities at 10473 S. Bacchus Hwy, 84009 (southwest Salt Lake County; the Census geocoder could not place this address in a city). Hours: Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; closed Sundays, New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.. Member cities: Draper, Herriman, Midvale, Murray, Riverton, Sandy, South Jordan and West Jordan.

    Cost & rules
    • Rechargeable batteries are taken free as household hazardous waste; alkaline batteries can go in the trash.
  4. Utah lead-acid battery return to dealerState program · UtahConditions applyCost not listed
    How it works

Utah DEQ tells households to return lead-acid (car, truck and boat) batteries to the dealer. Utah law (Utah Code Title 19, Chapter 6, Part 6) bars these batteries from landfills and other solid waste facilities. Ask the store about any limits or charges.

    Cost & rules
    • Lead-acid (vehicle) batteries only: DEQ says to return them to the dealer. Household batteries of other types need special care; DEQ points to a separate locator for lithium batteries.

Before you go

  1. Tape the terminals of lithium and rechargeable batteries before transport.
  2. Keep damaged, swollen or leaking batteries separate and tell the operator.
  3. Ask which battery types are accepted; car batteries often go somewhere different.
