    How it works

State law requires every wholesaler or retailer of lead-acid batteries (car, truck and similar batteries) to accept used lead-acid batteries on a one-for-one exchange basis and handle them properly. Lead-acid batteries are also banned from South Dakota landfills (SDCL 34A-6-67). The law does not cover household batteries.

    Cost & rules
    • Lead-acid batteries only, one used battery for each one exchanged, at a business that sells lead-acid batteries. Household batteries are not covered.
    • Lead-acid batteries may not go to any South Dakota landfill.

Before you go

  1. Tape the terminals of lithium and rechargeable batteries before transport.
  2. Keep damaged, swollen or leaking batteries separate and tell the operator.
  3. Ask which battery types are accepted; car batteries often go somewhere different.
