    How it works

Rhode Island battery dealers must accept a used vehicle battery from a consumer as an exchange when a new vehicle battery is bought. A dealer may add a core charge, waived when a used battery is turned in at purchase and refunded if it is brought back within 7 days. It is illegal to dispose of a vehicle battery in a landfill or incinerator.

    Cost & rules
    • Vehicle batteries only, as an exchange when you buy a new one; a core charge may apply and is waived or refunded when the old battery is returned.

Before you go

  1. Tape the terminals of lithium and rechargeable batteries before transport.
  2. Keep damaged, swollen or leaking batteries separate and tell the operator.
  3. Ask which battery types are accepted; car batteries often go somewhere different.
