  2. New Jersey covered electronic device recycling (Electronic Waste Management Act)State program · New JerseyNew Jersey residentsConditions applyFree
    How it works

Under the Electronic Waste Management Act (P.L.2007, c.347, N.J.S.A. 13:1E-99.94 et seq., as amended in 2008 and 2016), manufacturers finance recycling of covered electronic devices: desktop and laptop computers, monitors, desktop printers, desktop fax machines and TVs. No fees or costs may be charged to consumers. DEP must ensure collection opportunities in every county, and county recycling plans designate TV collection sites. These devices have been banned from the trash since January 1, 2011.

    Cost & rules
    • Only covered devices: computers, monitors, laptops, desktop printers, desktop fax machines and TVs. Cell phones and other handheld mobile devices are not covered, and neither are electronics inside appliances such as microwaves, washers, dryers and refrigerators.
    • Use a county or municipal collection site, or a manufacturer program. County recycling plans designate collection sites for used TVs, and DEP must ensure enough collection opportunities in each county. DEP keeps a website and toll-free number listing sites.
    • For consumers only: people, State entities, school districts and local governments. Business concerns are not covered. Recyclers may charge schools and local governments reasonable costs.

Condominiums, townhouses and apartments follow a separate schedule. Outside clean-ups, two bulk special pick-ups a year can be scheduled in municipal garbage districts (732-248-7288).

    Cost & rules
