    How it works

Kentucky stores that sell new motor vehicle tires must accept, if offered, one waste tire of similar size and type for each new tire sold, and must post a notice saying so. A $2 state fee is charged on each new tire. The law does not say whether a store must take tires without a purchase or whether it may charge a disposal fee.

    Cost & rules
    • When you buy new motor vehicle tires, the store must take your old tires of similar size and type, one for each new tire, if you offer them. The law does not say whether the store may charge a disposal fee.
    • Waste tires may only be disposed of at a permitted solid waste disposal facility; the retailer is supposed to encourage you to leave old tires with it.
