    How it works

Shawnee County Solid Waste collects trash for City of Topeka and rural Shawnee County customers ($22/month city, $23 rural). Customers on the 95-gallon rate may set out one large item per week (mattress and box spring, couch, household furniture) free on trash day; metal items need a scheduled pick-up with a $65 minimum fee. Optional curbside recycling ($3.50/month per cart) takes cardboard. No bulky pick-up on holiday weeks. Office 785-233-4774.

    Cost & rules
    • One large item per week on the regular trash day for 95-gallon customers; not on holiday weeks. One-can and 60-gallon customers must arrange (and pay for) bulky pick-ups.

Before you go

  1. Don’t assume a box spring is priced like a mattress; ask separately.
  2. Tell the operator if it’s a split (two-piece) box spring; some charge per piece.
  3. Check for moisture, mold or bed bugs before you go.
